Cornerstone has a rich history in Waggaman, La and the Greater New Orleans area.
Our site, first owned by the Fortier family, was sold in 1952 to the American Cyanamid Company, who soon after began producing acrylonitrile and nitrogen products. In 1957, the plant expanded its sulfuric acid unit, doubling its acrylonitrile production capacity. As part of a nitrogen products expansion program in 1965, the facility grew to four production units, constructing a urea plant and a low-pressure ammonia plant called Kellog.
In 1966, the original acetylene-based process that made acrylonitrile was shut down and replaced with a new propylene process, this time licensed by Sohio. 1971 marked the start of the plant's production of melamine. After converting the existing sulfuric acid plant into a Regen unit in 1993, Cytec Industries Inc. was spun off from the American Cyanamid Company to produce sulfuric acid, acrylonitrile, and melamine. In 2011 Cytec Industries was renamed Cornerstone Chemical Company.
Cornerstone prioritizes safety and operational excellence above all else. Our team works daily to increase awareness and focus on overall employee safety and well-being. We maintain an on-site emergency response team that is on call 24 hours a day, ready to tackle any safety issues that could arise.
Cornerstone's environmental protection program is working towards energy conservation, waste reduction, and minimizing emissions. Through this program, and similar efforts, Cornerstone is committed to improving environmental stewardship for our employees, our Jefferson Parish community, and globally.
Cornerstone’s corporate office is located in Metairie, LA. Cornerstone Energy Park is located on 800 acres in Waggaman, LA. Our facility manufactures acrylonitrile, melamine, sulfuric acid, and urea.
With a team of approximately 400 employees, we create high-quality, intermediate chemicals used in day-to-day business, entertainment, transportation, and military end products. For example, our acrylonitrile, the major raw material for acrylamide, is a highly sought-after component in aerospace-grade carbon fibers, including those in U.S. military and commercial aircraft.
Our innovative intermediate products and unmatched production standards help make essential components for goods that make life safer, help improve and protect the environment, and improve the longevity of many articles we use daily.
Our community is at the forefront of our operations. Whether providing STEM education programs, working with local charities, or providing scholarships to local students, we do our best to give back to the communities we live in and serve.
Some of the Cornerstone community programs we're actively involved in include:
Our products are powering the future and our team is powering our sustainability efforts, daily safe site operations, and our community investment programs.
